National Retirement Security Month: An Agent’s Guide

October is National Retirement Security Month, providing agents with a timely reason to reopen retirement-planning conversations. NAGDCA created a month-long effort focused on education, participation, and better retirement outcomes to raise awareness of retirement savings and financial security.

Financial Security Requires Planning and Difficult Conversations

Retirement readiness is a planning process that connects income, protection, taxes, health, and longevity. EBRI’s 2025 Retirement Confidence Survey found that 67% of workers and 78% of retirees feel confident they’ll have enough money to live comfortably, while 87% of workers expect Social Security to provide retirement income. However, the Federal Reserve found that only 35% of non-retirees believed their retirement savings plan was on track in 2024.

These findings create an opening for better questions. Can a client generate reliable retirement income? What happens if markets fall early in retirement? How might inflation, longevity, or health-related expenses change the plan?

A strong review can also address life insurance, living benefits, long-term-care coverage, or chronic illness coverage. For small-business owners, it may include succession planning, business continuity, and key-person protection. Beneficiary designations, legacy goals, and tax considerations belong in the discussion, too. Refer tax questions to qualified tax professionals.

Build a Four-Week Outreach Campaign

Use National Retirement Security Month as a structured touchpoint, not a single social post.

  • Week One: Share a retirement income checklist and invite clients to schedule a review.
  • Week Two: Discuss market risk, sequence-of-returns risk, inflation, and longevity.
  • Week Three: Address health costs, living benefits, life insurance, and long-term-care coverage.
  • Week Four: Focus on small-business succession, beneficiaries, legacy planning, and next steps.

Some conversation starters you can use:

Email: “October is National Retirement Security Month. Would you like to review your income, protection, and longevity strategies before year-end?”

LinkedIn: “Retirement security involves more than an account balance. It also includes income reliability, health costs, market risk, and legacy planning.”

Client Review: “Which retirement risk concerns you most: income volatility, health expenses, longevity, or leaving a clear legacy?”

Ask clients to review:

  • Income sources and expected retirement timing.
  • Social Security and other guaranteed income options.
  • Market exposure and withdrawal strategy.
  • Inflation, longevity, and health-related expenses.
  • Life insurance and living benefits.
  • Beneficiaries, legacy goals, and tax coordination.
  • Business succession plans for owners.

Track invitations, replies, booked meetings, and completed reviews. That data can shape future planning and financial planning campaigns.
